CartPause vs YNAB: Budgeting App or Pause Before You Buy?

YNAB tells you what you can afford. CartPause stops the purchase you didn’t plan for. YNAB and CartPause aren’t really competitors. YNAB is a budgeting app that manages the money you have; CartPause is a pause-before-you-buy app that keeps impulse buys from eating into it. Many people are better off using both.

Facts about YNAB come from ynab.com and its pricing page as of October 3, 2026.

How does YNAB work?

YNAB (You Need A Budget) works by giving every dollar a job before you spend it. You connect your bank so YNAB can import transactions automatically, or enter them yourself, then assign your income to categories and adjust when life happens. YNAB runs on your computer, phone, and tablet, syncs across them, and works offline. As of October 2026, YNAB costs $14.99 a month or $109 a year after a 34-day free trial with no credit card required.

How does CartPause work?

CartPause works on the product page and never tracks your accounts. When something tempts you, tap Share on the product page in any shopping app or browser and pick CartPause. CartPause pulls in the name, price, and image and starts a 72, 48, or 24-hour pause. When the pause ends, Penny, the AI spending coach, asks a few short questions and you decide: pass, save it for Someday, or buy it. Give it 72 hours and you’ll skip most purchases. That could be $2,400 kept in your account each year.

The pause works because of timing. Brain-imaging research shows that seeing a product you want switches on the brain’s reward-anticipation circuitry before you decide to buy (Knutson et al., 2007). CartPause moves the decision out of that moment; YNAB records the decision after it’s made.

What does one impulse buy look like in each app?

Say you’ve budgeted $100 a month for “Fun money” and at 10pm a $70 smart speaker shows up in an ad.

With YNAB alone, you buy the speaker, the transaction imports from your bank the next day, and YNAB shows $30 left in Fun money for the rest of the month. YNAB did its job: the overspend is visible, and you can move money from another category to cover it. YNAB just can’t stop the purchase, because the purchase happened outside YNAB.

With CartPause in front, you tap Share on the speaker’s product page and pick CartPause instead of checking out. A 72-hour pause starts. Three days later Penny asks a couple of questions, and if you pass, nothing reaches your bank and YNAB’s Fun money stays at $100. If you still want the speaker, you buy it with a clear head, and YNAB tracks it like any other purchase.

What do you need to set each one up?

YNAB works best with your bank accounts linked and some time spent setting up categories and learning the method. YNAB’s own site pitches the method as much as the app.

CartPause needs an iPhone or iPad and Sign in with Apple. There are no accounts to link and no categories to set up; the first time you share a product, CartPause is working. The free Safari and Chrome extensions add the same pause to shopping on a Mac or PC.

What can’t each app do?

YNAB can’t intercept a purchase before checkout; YNAB only sees spending once it reaches your accounts or you log it. CartPause can’t budget: CartPause has no categories, no income tracking, and no view of bills or debt. CartPause is also iPhone and iPad only for now, while YNAB is on more platforms.

How much does each cost over a year?

YNAB is $109 a year, or $179.88 over twelve months at $14.99 a month, per its pricing page as of October 2026. CartPause is free with an unlimited cart, the pause timer, and Penny. CartPause Pro, which adds the total savings counter, saving analytics, the Someday wishlist, and the Home Screen widget, is $19.99 a year, $23.88 over twelve months at $1.99 a month, or $39.99 once. Running both with annual plans costs $128.99 a year.

Which one should you pick?

Pick YNAB if you want a full picture of your money and a plan for every dollar.

Pick CartPause if your budget keeps getting blown by things you buy online on a whim, and you want a pause in front of those buys instead of a spreadsheet after them.

Use both if you budget already but impulse buys keep breaking it. CartPause catches the purchase; YNAB tracks what’s left.
